New Tab

Customize your new-tab dashboard with a clock, search, optional weather, rearrangeable widgets, theme controls, and credited landscape backgrounds.

New Tab replaces the browser’s new-tab page with a dashboard that keeps preferences in your browser profile. Arrange the clock, search, and weather widgets, pick a theme, and use attributed landscape photographs as rotating backgrounds.

Customize the dashboard

  1. Open a new tab and select Customize.
  2. In Appearance, choose system, light, or dark mode. Enable or disable landscape backgrounds, or select Change background now to rotate the image.
  3. In Search, choose Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo for web searches. ChatGPT remains a separate action.
  4. In Widgets, choose which widgets to show and adjust their layout.
  5. In Weather, optionally search for a city by name and choose a result. The extension never requests device location.
  6. Close settings. Use Arrange on the dashboard to reorder visible widgets, then select Done arranging.

Weather is off until a city is selected. Weather data comes from Open-Meteo; background photos and attribution come from Wikimedia Commons.

Download the latest release

The download links always redirect to the latest stable release for this extension.

Install a local build

  1. Clone the source repository, then run bun install and bun run prepare:wxt from its root.
  2. Run bun run --filter new-tab-ext build.
  3. Load apps/new-tab-ext/.output/chrome-mv3 in Chrome through chrome://extensions with Developer mode enabled.
  4. Select apps/new-tab-ext/.output/firefox-mv3/manifest.json through about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox.

Preferences and privacy

Preferences are stored on this device in the browser profile. No account, analytics, or app backend is used. Search queries go directly to the provider you choose; ChatGPT actions open ChatGPT. Weather city searches and selected coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo to retrieve weather. No device location is read. Wikimedia receives requests for background images, not your search or city. The weather feature uses Open-Meteo’s free API, which is for non-commercial use.

Troubleshooting

  • Weather is blank: enable the widget in Widgets, choose a city in Weather, and check access to Open-Meteo.
  • Search opens the wrong provider: update the selection in Customize → Search.
  • Backgrounds are not changing: enable landscape backgrounds and check access to Wikimedia Commons.
  • A layout change did not persist: confirm the extension is enabled and the browser profile’s storage is available.
