Mute Tab Manager
Toggle browser-tab audio from the toolbar or keyboard, mute all tabs, and keep YouTube player audio synchronized with each tab's mute state.
Mute Tab Manager lets you mute or unmute tabs across Chrome and Firefox, including YouTube player audio. Muted tabs receive an M badge, and their muted state is retained for the current browser session.
Mute a tab
- Select the toolbar action to toggle mute for the active tab.
- Use
Alt+Shift+Mto toggle the active tab from the keyboard. Browser or operating-system shortcut conflicts can override this key combination. - Open the toolbar action’s context menu and choose the command to mute all tabs.
For YouTube, the extension synchronizes the player element’s audio with the tab’s mute state across single-page navigation and reloads. The toolbar icon adapts to the system’s dark-mode setting.

Permissions and privacy
The extension uses activeTab and tabs to control tab audio, contextMenus for the mute-all command, and storage for session state. It requests YouTube host access to keep the player element in sync. Chrome also uses offscreen for dark-mode detection. Firefox declares no data collection.
Troubleshooting
- The shortcut does not work: check
chrome://extensions/shortcuts(Chrome) or the browser’s extension shortcut settings for conflicts. - YouTube sound does not follow tab mute: reload the YouTube tab and confirm the extension is allowed to run there.
- The badge is missing: confirm the tab is muted and the extension toolbar action is visible.
